What SOHA is, and why my husband and I joined . . . .
SOHA - Southwest Oral History Association - is an association of folks who work in oral history disciplines either in the private sector or in public institutions. It is a non-profit corporation, but I'm not sure of the designation. We have a board which meets 4 times a year and we hold an annual conference in the Spring. This year it was in San Diego. The organization spans Southern California, Nevada, Arizona and New Mexico thus the name "Southwest".
SOHA offers mini grants and conference scholarships to deserving students who must go through an application process. Awardees are selected by a scholarship committee.
We offer beginning and advanced workshops at our annual conference time. Usually workshops are held on Friday and the main body of the conference is on Saturday and Sunday morning. Papers are presented and we usually have some kind of interesting presentation or performance during the plenary session on Sunday. Our annual meeting is also held on Sunday morning where any business is taken care of and new officers are elected.
Membership is very reasonable at $20 a year and includes a directory of current members as well as a quarterly newsletter. If you would be interested in becoming a member, I can have a membership brochure sent to you.
My husband, who did an extensive oral history with photographist Robert Heinecken for UCLA, and I have been SOHA members for the past ten years and have enjoyed friendships with many other oral historians. I trust this answers your inquiry. If I can be of further help or if you wish to contact other members, please do not hesitate to email me again.
